Story Format

Snow is told in a somewhat-contemporary style of linked Tanka (短歌) poetry. But instead of simply being read, the story is sung. Each piece of the story is made up of a poem. The poems are then joined together into sections that make up songs.

Traditionally, Tanka seems to be unrhymed poetry so it isn't exactly accurate to say that this story is made up of a pure Tanka style. The reasoning behind this is that rhyming (when used in moderation,) can serve as a useful device for transforming words on pages into lyrics for songs.
